IU Returns With “Unknown Planet” and “Dear My Crazy Soulmate,” Her First New Music in a Year

The Korean singer-songwriter launches the next chapter of her sixth studio album with two self-written title tracks and a pair of cinematic music videos.

IU is officially back with new music.

The singer-songwriter released her new digital single “Unknown Planet” on September 10, featuring two title tracks, “Unknown Planet” and “Dear My Crazy Soulmate.” Both songs were written by IU herself and will eventually appear on her upcoming sixth studio album.

The release marks IU’s first new music in exactly one year.

Her previous single, “Bye, Summer,” arrived on September 10, 2025, making the identical release date a pretty fun coincidence for fans getting another unexpected IU drop one year later.

This time around, though, the new songs are connected to something bigger.

“Unknown Planet” and “Dear My Crazy Soulmate” are both confirmed as early releases from IU’s forthcoming sixth full-length album. A release date for that project has not yet been announced, so these two tracks are currently the clearest look at where her next album may be heading.

The rollout has also leaned heavily into storytelling.

Early teasers introduced a dreamy space concept filled with planets, astronauts and paper airplanes. The “Unknown Planet” visual preview goes even further, showing people from around the world connecting through a fictional service called “Unknown Planet” and sharing pieces of their lives with strangers.

Then “Dear My Crazy Soulmate” goes somewhere completely different.

In its teaser, IU appears as a police officer inside a station before a window suddenly shatters. An elderly woman appears outside and calmly offers her hands to be placed in cuffs, immediately turning the video into one of those IU concepts where you already know there is probably a lot more going on underneath the surface.

The full “Dear My Crazy Soulmate” music video accompanies the September 10 release, while the “Unknown Planet” music video is scheduled to follow on September 16.

That staggered approach gives fans a little more time with the songs before the entire visual story is revealed.

It also feels very IU.

Her releases have rarely depended only on choreography or traditional performance videos. IU has consistently leaned into character-driven visuals and concepts that feel closer to short films, with the music providing the emotional center.

The fact that she wrote both new songs herself makes this release even more interesting.

IU has been deeply involved in her songwriting throughout her career, and these two tracks continue that tradition while also setting up her first full-length studio album since LILAC in 2021.

That is a long gap between proper albums, even if IU has hardly disappeared during that time.

She has continued releasing music, performing concerts and maintaining a major acting career, but a new studio album brings a different level of anticipation. If “Unknown Planet” and “Dear My Crazy Soulmate” really are the first pieces of that project, they give fans something concrete to follow while waiting for the rest.

And the timing feels intentional.

Instead of revealing everything at once, IU has spent the past week dropping small clues, cosmic imagery, track information and separate music video teasers before finally releasing the songs.

The next arrives September 16.
