[Concert Review] KATSEYE in Phoenix — A Beautifully Chaotic & Gnarly Night
With the virality on TikTok and their infectious dances taking over social media, I have some
sort of idea of who they are because of it, but you might still have to ask...who is KATSEYE?
This global girl group was formed through Dream Academy, a Netflix reality series that applied
K-Pop-style training and evaluation methods to a pool of 120,000 girls. After months of
competition, six finalists — Daniela, Lara, Megan, Sophia, Yoonchae, and Manon — emerged as
the official lineup of KATSEYE. Their Beautiful Chaos Tour is the group’s first chance to
define themselves live, and based on this performance, it will be the first of many.
Instead of a traditional opener, a loop of their songs and music videos played while fans filled the
theater — and filled it completely. I wondered if hearing the music beforehand might dull the
hype, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The second the group appeared on the elevated
platform, the theater erupted. EYEKONS — the name for their fans — screamed as the girls
launched right into “Debut,” “Gameboy,” and “I’m Pretty.”

As a newer listener, I appreciated that KATSEYE took a moment early on to introduce
themselves individually. They know they’re still a fresh act; even in a sold-out room, there are
always guests discovering them for the first time. As an intermission, a brief video from Dream
Academy highlighted each member’s journey and their passion. One particularly emotional
moment came when Sophia mentioned attending school in the Philippines and being Filipino. As
a Filipino girl myself, I rarely saw people who looked like me in the spotlight growing up.
Seeing her up there made the night feel even more special.

With a smaller discography, the group smartly leaned into extended choreography moments.
“Gabriela” ended with a powerful dance section, and while “Monster High” felt slightly out of
place musically, the chant of “M-O-N-S-T-E-R” proved the crowd didn’t mind at all. The show
ran just about an hour, with a significant portion dedicated not only to vocals but dynamic visuals
and intense dance routines — and the girls delivered.
The standout of the night was “Gnarly.” Their synchronization is jaw-dropping — switching
positions effortlessly while never losing power. It earned the loudest screams of the entire
concert.
What surprised me most? Phones stayed down. Even with dance breaks, including the
“Milkshake” dance from their Guess ad, the audience was locked in — more present than I’ve
seen at many concerts lately. KATSEYE didn’t just perform; they commanded attention.
KATSEYE is a group that pulls you in — with every lyric, every beat, and every perfectly-sharp
move. If this is their introduction to the world, the world better keep watching.
