[Concert Review] KUN Brings a Full-Blown Funk-Soul Party to the Fonda Theater
When you walk into a venue and immediately feel the energy buzzing before the show even starts, you know you’re in for something special. That was the vibe at the Fonda Theater in Hollywood last night, where my wife and I were invited to cover KUN’s show thanks to 42West. And let me tell you, this wasn’t just a concert—it was a full-on celebration of music, artistry, and connection.
Doors opened at 8 PM, and by the time the lights went down at 9:40, the room was electric. While we waited, old-school tracks filled the air, setting the mood for the funky, soulful sound KUN is known for. Fans were dressed to impress, rocking cat-ear headbands that have basically become part of the KUN concert culture, and there were birthday banners, flowers, and even a boba truck parked outside with his photos plastered on it. The love in that crowd was unreal.
The show kicked off with "What A Day," and from the first note, it was obvious we were about to witness something special. The band—complete with drums, bass, guitar, brass, keys, backup singers, the whole package—came out swinging. Everything was live, everything was tight, and KUN commanded the stage like a natural-born rockstar. Think Prince-level swagger meets modern soul and R&B vibes. The man knows how to turn a room into a party.
The setlist kept the crowd on its toes. "Ordinary Love" and "Lover" had everyone singing their lungs out, "Hard To Get" brought the groove up a notch, and "Remedy" slowed things down into a beautiful, heartfelt moment. At one point, I overheard two security guards hyping him up, saying how good he sounded live and how they couldn’t wait for "Deadman." When even venue staff are fangirling, you know the show’s on another level.
By the time he introduced "Jasmine," a track he described as a figment of his imagination (dropping August 8), the crowd was locked in, soaking up every second. There was a point during this song where I swear I got Prince vibes again—the way KUN moved, the way the band jammed together—it was pure magic.
Of course, no KUN show could end without "Deadman." The crowd chanted for it until the encore hit, and when those opening notes dropped, the theater erupted. Confetti blasted through the air, the band went all in, and KUN gave a performance that left everyone screaming, singing, and completely blown away. Goosebumps. Jaw on the floor. No exaggeration.
He closed the night by introducing his incredible bandmates, receiving a birthday cake on stage, and thanking the crowd with a genuine, heartfelt smile. It was one of those rare shows where time flies because you’re so locked into the moment.
If this is what KUN can do in a single theater show, I can’t even imagine what a world tour would look like. Here’s hoping we find out soon. Until then, I’ll be replaying this night in my head over and over again.
